Are eye drops really poisonous if consumed, or is that a myth? - Quora
https://www.quora.com/Are-eye-drops-really-poisonous-if-consumed-or-is-that-a-myth
Mar 16, 2015 - No. That is a myth*. Eye drops are no more toxic than any other kind of medication. Eye drops contain medications, real medicines, like antibiotics, and ...

Some answers focused on the toxicity of Tetrahydrozoline, an imidazoline drug that is found in popular over-the-counter drops like Visine. Its effect in these drops is to “whiten” the eye by constricting surface blood vessels. The drug is chemically similar to clonidine and monoxidine. These drugs are centrally acting (have effects in the brain) anti-hypertensives. They lower blood pressure and at higher doses can slow the heart rate (bradycardia). So if you drank a lot of Visine, you would get similar toxic effects from taking too much clonidine or too much Monoxidine. In fact, there are several case reports in the medical literature describing exactly such a situation[1]. “The incidence of serious adverse effects is low in patients receiving therapeutic dosages of topical tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride.”[2]Another article reviewed 13 cases of deliberate poisoning with tetrahydrozoline. None were reported to have resulted in death[3]. In its annual report for 2016, the American Association of Poison Control Centers noted 859 case mentions of tetrahydrozoline poisoning from “ophthalmic preparations” (read: eyedrops) alone. Of those, 730 of were unintentional and not a single case resulted in death.[4]
*It has been suggested that the idea that eye drops are toxic may come from the scene in the 2005 film Wedding Crashers which includes the use of eye drops containing tetrahydrozoline to poison a person's drink. Tetryzoline - Wikipedia. Somehow this has become something of an “urban legend”.
Footnotes

What are the effects of Visine if ingested?
Apr 16, 2017 MSDS sheets I found on the ‘net indicate a LD50 for mice of around 345 mg/Kg (The Lethal Dose 50% quantity is the amount of chemical which will kill half of the test animals it is administered to).

The three MSDS sheets I found don’t indicate what dosages of the drug start to produce adverse side effects in humans. Extrapolating from rodents to humans is not always applicable. An entire bottle probably wouldn’t kill a typical 50 Kg man, but might very well make him sick.
