Eruv - Wikipedia An eruv ([ʕeˈʁuv]; Hebrew: עירוב , "mixture", also transliterated as eiruv or erub, plural: eruvin .... within the jointly held property without transgressing the prohibition against carrying a burden across a property line on Jewish Sabbath. Controversies  The installation of eruvin has been a matter of contention in many neighbourhoods around the world, with notable examples such as the London Borough of Barnet; Outremont, Quebec; Tenafly, New Jersey; Westhampton Beach, New York; and Bergen County, New Jersey.

As the property-owner is the owner of the public streets, sidewalks and the utility poles on which symbolic boundaries are to be strung, some authorities have interpreted Jewish law as requiring the local government to participate in the process as one of the property owners by agreeing to creation of the eruv, and to give permission for the construction of a symbolic boundary on its property. In addition, because municipal law and the rules of utility companies, in general, prohibit third parties from stringing attachments to utility poles and wires, the creation of an eruv has often necessitated obtaining permissions, easements, and exceptions to various local ordinances. These requirements that government give active permission for an eruv have given rise to both political and legal controversy.

6/4/2018 -  28-year-old man is accused of vandalizing the eruv line, a Jewish landmark constructed in 1990.a set of poles and string that surround the town and serve as a boundary for the Jewish community to carry items out of their homes on the Sabbath.  SHARON — A resident who formerly attended a temple in charge of maintaining a Jewish landmark in town has now been charged with repeatedly vandalizing it, police said. Yerachmiel E. Taube, 28, was arrested by Sharon police on Saturday and charged with malicious destruction of property, destruction to a religious organization, disorderly conduct and a civil rights violation.

Police say the eruv line was cut several times dating back to September. They were contacted in January by Rabbi Noah Cheses of Young Israel of Sharon, the temple that maintains the eruv. Police later learned that boards attached to trees that held the line in place were being torn off.

“Constructed in 1990, the eruv has served as a critical piece of infrastructure for the Jewish community by creating a sense of togetherness for hundreds of households in the town of Sharon,” the police department wrote in a Facebook post. “Over 40 volunteers put in significant time and effort in order to maintain this eruv on a weekly basis. There has been repeated vandalism of the line.”

During Taube’s arraignment, the prosecutor said Sharon police installed a camera along the Massapoag trail, the area where the eruv line was being damaged most frequently, last week. Police say the camera, which took a photograph every few seconds, captured the suspect cutting the eruv line.

Police say an officer who was familiar with Taube recognized him as the suspect in the video
