Safe Schools Coalition Australia (SSCA) is a group of organisations in Australia focused on LGBTIQ people in schools. Its mission is to create safe and inclusive schools for students, families and staff who are in these groups.[5] There is opposition to the program relating to sexuality and gender concepts being taught in schools.[11] Politician Penny Sharpe has said that this opposition stems from homophobia. the program is opposed by some religious groups, particularly the Christian right, with the program said to be "gagged" on same-sex marriage while the Safe Schools Coalition said there had been "no change to media protocols".[34] The Australian Christian Lobby and the Former National Party senator Bill O'Chee have criticised the program.[27]Former Labor senator Joe Bullock has also criticised Safe Schools.[52] Former Democrats Senator Brian Greig stated that the criticism from religious conservatives echoed the 1997 conservative response to "Here for Life", the anti-suicide program introduced by the Keating Government's Carmen Lawrence for gay and lesbian teenagers.[53] After conservatives described it as “promoting homosexuality” and “recruiting children”, the newly elected Howard Government cancelled the Here for Life program.[53]

"A lot of Muslim community are concerned that religious rights will be trampled in Islamic schools [and that they] will have to follow a national curriculum that will teach things that go against the fundamentals of their religion, so they are concerned about it," he said. "Will it trample on our religious freedom because we are already afraid to build mosques, because we get right wing groups complaining about mosques, so will this have further impact on our rights and freedoms?
"The Muslim community is not speaking because the climate which is created in this country, we are not allowed to speak. We speak up and are called a terrorist, unpatriotic and all those slurs. Recently Council of Imams Queensland president Yusuf Peer said gay marriage was unacceptable to Islam, and that Muslims should respect LGBTQI people but "condemn only their actions" "Islam also explicitly and unambiguously states that marital relationship is only permissible between a man and woman; any other marital relationships are Islamicly impermissible." But the Muslim community's view is not unanimous. difficult to define a single Islamic position on homosexuality, because Islam is diverse, "Most Islamic scholars are in agreement that homosexuality is incompatible with Islamic theology.

One large, statistically valid, controlled study (King, Br.J.Psych.2003) finds no difference whatsoever in levels of bullying reported by gay men versus heterosexual men – whether verbal or physical, whether at school or subsequently.[i]
