Wikipedia: 2014 Ayotzinapa Normal School police attack In September 2014, Iguala was the site of a brutal mass murder that drew international attention, when the Iguala municipal police attacked a group of students from the Ayotzinapa Normal School. Six people, including four students and two passersby, were killed when the police opened fire on buses containing the students, and another bus carrying a local soccer team. 43 other students were taken away by police, who denied having them in custody. One student's body was found that day, tortured and with head flayed and his eyes gouged out.[1] A mass grave, believed to contain the charred bodies of 28 of the students, was discovered near Iguala on October 5.[2] They had been tortured and, according to reports, burned alive.[3] 22 police officers, said to be acting in concert with the Guerreros Unidos criminal gang, were arrested for the murders. Eight other cartel members were also arrested. The mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, had been accused of direct participation in earlier torture murders of activists.[4] He and some associates fled the area and were declared fugitives. The Guerreros Unidos left a banner demanding the release of the 22 police officers or they would release the names of people who worked with them,[5] and protesters demanding justice for the victims marched in different cities.[6]
