July 22, 2014 US Hands Hamas Victory In Banning Flights To Israel  FAA issues a notice banning flights to Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv after a rocket strike which landed approximately one mile from the airport on that morning.  Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri declared “The success of Hamas in closing Israeli airspace is a great victory for the resistance, and is the crown of Israel’s failure”

Is Hamas engaging in terrorism against international air traffic by targeting the airport just days after pro-Russian terrorists shot down an airliner by mistake or otherwise?

  • 2014 flight bans and cancellations[edit]

On July 22, 2014, due to fears of missile attacks during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, numerous international airlines began cancelling all flights to Ben Gurion Airport. The United States Federal Aviation Administration banned all U.S. flights from flying to Tel Aviv for 24 hours. European airlines also followed suit after the European Aviation Safety Agency issued a "strong recommendation" to avoid Ben Gurion Airport. European flights to Tel Aviv have therefore been cancelled "indefinitely" beginning July 22, 2014. Other airlines such as Turkish Airlines and Korean Air have also cancelled all flights to Tel Aviv indefinitely.[8][9][10][11]
The Federal Aviation Administration subsequently lifted the restriction on 23 July.[12]

Hamas Pricks Israel’s Soft Under-Belly, Ben Gurion Airport Hamas has hit Palestine’s bloodthirsty occupier where it could hurt real bad — in the soft under-belly that is Ben Gurion airport. The Resistance has achieved this by lobbing a rocket too close for comfort and causing air carriers in the United States and Europe to halt flights to Tel Aviv after warnings from governmental agencies concerned about passenger safety. Reuters reported that Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, called for US airlines to resume flights to Israel. “There is no need for US carriers to suspend flights and reward terrorism,” said a statement from Israel’s Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz.

Ben Gurion airport, near Tel Aviv, belongs to the Palestinians anyway. It was formerly Lydda airport; and Lydda, a major town in its own right during the British mandate, was designated Palestinian in the 1947 UN Partition. In July 1948 Israeli terrorist troops seized Lydda, shot up the town and drove out the population as  part of their ethnic cleansing programme. In the process they massacred 426 men, women, and children. 176 of them were slaughtered in the town’s main mosque. See http://www.palestineremembered.com/al-Ramla/al-Lydd/index.html for the lurid details.

what happened to Gaza’s airport. The Oslo II Agreement of 1995 provided for one to be constructed. The Yasser Arafat International airport was built with funding from Japan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Germany and Morocco, and cost $86 million. Arafat and US President Clinton attended the opening in 1998. Owned and operated by the Palestinian Authority it was capable of handling 700,000 passengers a year. In December 2001 Israel destroyed the radar station and control tower, and cut the runway.

2 days ago - Israel could not accept the risk of a Hamas takeover of the West Bank and the resulting Hamas rocket attacks at the nearby Ben Gurion Airport.

  • Israel as a result of a rocket landing in a town nearby.

At first it was unclear if this was a unilateral action, or under pressure from governments. It appears that the FAA and European aviation authority issued a temporary order to that effect.

El Al continues to fly, as do some other airlines. But one cancellation can have a ripple effect as other airlines are questioned whether they are putting passengers at undo risk in light of other airlines’ can

The implications are enormous. Whether intended or not, Hamas has made the case as to why it’s rocket arsenal and infrastructure must be dismantled no matter the cost. It also has justified why Israel cannot give up security control of Judea and Samaria (the “West Bank”). Hamas has to fire a long way to scare away air traffic, but from the West Bank it’s practically a stone’s throw.

Alan Dershowitz points out, Has Hamas ended the prospects for a two state solution?(h/t Roger Simon):

Even more importantly, Hamas’ actions in essentially closing down international air traffic into Israel, considerably reduces the prospect of any two-state solution. Israel will now be more reluctant than ever to give up military control over the West Bank, which is even closer to Ben Gurion Airport than is Gaza.

Were Israel to end its military occupation of the West Bank—as distinguished from its civilian settlements deep in the West Bank—it would risk the possibility of a Hamas takeover. That is precisely what happened when Israel removed both its civilian settlements and its military presence in Gaza. Hamas took control, fired thousands of rockets at Israeli civilian targets and have now succeeded in stopping international air traffic into and out of Israel.

Israel could not accept the risk of a Hamas takeover of the West Bank and the resulting Hamas rocket attacks at the nearby Ben Gurion Airport. It may still be possible to create a two-state solution whereby Israel withdraws its civilian settlers from most of the West Bank and agrees to land swaps for areas that now contain large settlement blocks. But Israel will have to retain military control over its security borders, which extend to the Jordan River….
