1 injured, 9 arrested. China stabbing attack on journalist February 26, 2014 Kevin Lau Hong Kong Editor Meat Cleaver Attack Kevin Lau, former chief editor of the Hong Kong daily newspaper Ming Pao was attacked by two men who were waiting for him with meat cleavers. He was slashed in the back in broad daylight as he left his car, and the attacker fled with an accomplice on a motorcycle. He suffered stab wounds to his back and legs. The police and most commentators agree that it was a triad-style attack aimed at maiming without killing. Local journalists and press saw the attack as not a random crime, but retaliation for criticism of the mainland Chinese establishment. Thousands rallied to denounce violence and intimidation of the media. Nine people, some of whom have connections to triads, were arrested in connection with the attack. The two main suspects were detained in Guangdong province.

Apparently unconnected incidents that are likely connected:

Violence against journalists and media owners[edit]

Since the 1990s, there have been a spate of unsolved attacks against journalists and media owners who are not aligned with the Chinese Government.[12] In 1996, journalist Leung Tin-wai was stabbed; in 1998, radio talk show host Albert Cheng was stabbed by a group of thugs while leaving his office. In June 2013, Chen Ping, the publisher of iSun Affairs, a weekly magazine banned on the mainland, was beaten by two men armed with batons.[14][15] Three masked men with knives threatened workers at Next Media, publisher of Apple Daily, and set thousands of copies of the paper on fire.[15] Its proprietor,Jimmy Lai, a fervent supporter of the Pan-democracy camp, was confronted by an attacker who rammed the gate of his home with a stolen car, left weapons at the scene and fled.[14][15]

guardian: Threats and attacks against outspoken Hong Kong journalists, while uncommon, are hardly new. Last June, Chen Ping, the publisher of iSun Affairs, an outspoken weekly magazine that's banned on the mainland, was beaten by two baton-wielding men. Days later, Jimmy Lai, a prominent anti-Beijing media mogul, was also targeted – an attacker rammed the gate of his home with a stolen car, then left an axe and a machete on the pavement before fleeing the scene.
In 1996, journalist Leung Tin-wai was stabbed in the back; in 1998, radio talk show host Albert Cheng was stabbed by a group of thugs while leaving his office. All of the cases remain unsolved.
