Chinese J-31 Stealth Fighter F-35 JSF Knockoff

Chinese J-31 Stealth Fighter F-35 JSF Knockoff ---
Chinese J-31 Stealth Fighter F-35 Knockoff News ---

The J-31 is the new smaller Chinese PLA stealth fighter. It looks like essentially a Lockheed Martin F-35 JSF knockoff down to wing shape, unique dual inward cheek intakes and weapons bays. However, it has twin engines since they lack capability to do a massive single engine, and of course, there is no tricky vertical takeoff version with a shaft-driven fan behind the pilot and pivoting tailpipe. The WS13 / RD-33 / RD-93 engine was developed by Russia's Klimov design bureau specifically for the FC-1 fighter, known in Pakistan as the JF-17 Thunder. Each produces 11,500 lbf dry; 19,420 lbf with afterburner The PW F135 produces 43,000 lbf with a single massive engine,  and also has version which drives a lift fan for the jump jet version. The original modern dogfighting turbofan fighter engine the F100-100 first flew in an F-15 Eagle in 1972 with a thrust of 23,930 lbf.

The F-35 has a unique 360 deg camera sensor system that covers upper and lower hemispheres of vision, there no indication the Chinese have this system.

The original F-35 is intended to replace 3 aircraft that were originally intended to be relatively lightweight and low-cost complements to expensive aircraft, the F-16 lightweight and F-18 middle weight fighter and A-10 ground attack plane. But some criticize its agility and no longer featherweight size when its maximum takeoff weight of 70,000lb is even more than the massive Vietnam era single engine F-105 strike fighter or even the 60,000lb F-4 Phantom, and is close to the original 68-80,000lb F-15 Eagle "heavyweight" multirole fighter.

It will have a carrier version, though since the Chinese don't have a real operational carrier . that won't make too much difference in the short run.

Comparison:

Crew: one (pilot)
Length: 16.9 m (55 ft 5 in)   vs 50.5 ft
Wingspan: 11.5 m (37 ft 9 in) vs 35 ft
Height: 4.8 m (15 ft 9 in) vs 14.2 ft
Wing area: 40 m2 (430 sq ft) vs 460
Gross weight: 17,600 kg (38,801 lb)  49,540, 70,000 max takeoff
Powerplant: 2 × RD-93 afterburning Turbofans, 84 kN (19,000 lbf) thrust each
Powerplant: 2 × WS-13A afterburning Turbofans, 100 kN (22,000 lbf) thrust each
both engines 44,000 vs 43,000 for F-35
Maximum speed: Mach 1.8 vs M 1.6
Combat range: 1,250 km (777 mi; 675 nmi)  vs 1,200 nmi internal
Ferry range: 4,000 km (2,485 mi; 2,160 nmi)

The F-35 wins for sensor systems, stealth, efficiency (one vs two engines for same thrust), likely more payload and range, plus better trained pilots.  But the J-31 is a new approach of newer Chinese systems which mimic American rather than slavishly clone Russian systems. The Americans have a heritage of both great strike fighters and great dogfighters. The Chinese have only recently produced indigenous designs comparable to 70's era F-15s and F-16s, and copies of Russian designs, and they have never produced even experimental vertical takeoff or landing aircraft, or any notable research aircraft of any kind unlike the Russians.

The Shenyang J-31,[3][4] (or "FC-31 4th Generation Multi-Purpose Medium Fighter")[5] also known as "Gyrfalcon" (鹘鹰), or Falcon Hawk by some military enthusiasts,[6][7] is a twin-engine, mid-size jet fighter currently under development by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. The fighter has also been referred to as F-60 or J-21 Snowy Owl (雪鸮) in some media reports.[3][2][8]

Development[edit]

A photo of a model labeled F-60 was posted on the Internet in September 2011.[9] In June 2012, photos and camera video clips started to emerge on internet about a heavily overwrapped possible F-60 prototype being road-transferred on a highway, earning the nickname "the zongzi plane" (粽子机) among Chinese netizens, though some suspect it of merely being a L-15 trainer aircraft.[10] Pictures of a possibly fully assembled aircraft parking on an airfield emerged on September 15–16, 2012.[11][12] The F-60 is reported to be the export version, where the J-31 would be the domestic Chinese version of the same fighter.[13] Chinese aviation expert Xu Yongling has called the J-31 an export-oriented low-end latest generation warplane.[14]
It is unknown if the J-31 is meant to be a competitor to the J-20 stealth fighter or a complement to it. It is also unknown if it will be a land-based fighter for the People's Liberation Army Air Force, or a carrier-based fighter for the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force on the Liaoning Aircraft Carrier[7] and future Chinese carriers. The J-31's chief designer, Sun Cong, has said that he hoped that the aircraft would follow his J-15 onto China's aircraft carriers.[15][16] However, industry sources say development of the J-31 was provided entirely by the PLAAF with no input from the PLAN. This would mean the Air Force plans to operate two stealth fighters for different missions, like the U.S. Air Force with the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II; the heavier J-20 would primarily be a high-altitude dogfighter, while the J-31 would perform a multitude of medium and low-altitude missions (in addition to air-to-air) including close air support, air interdiction, aerial bombardment, andsuppression of enemy air defenses.[17]
On 30 December 2013, Sina Corp reported that the J-31 would be redesigned to have ground attack capabilities. The J-31 acting as a stealthy tactical bomber fills a gap in Chinese close air support between theXian JH-7 and the expensive Xian H-6 strategic bomber. The PLAAF operates the Sukhoi Su-30MK2 for the mission, but that is vulnerable to radar detection. By making the J-31 less dedicated to the fighter role, its range, payload, and stealth can be increased.[18]
According to Janes, Pakistan is planning to purchase 30 to 40 planes.[19]

Strategic implications[edit]

The appearance of the J-31 raised concern about a potential arms race in Asia, as some of China's neighbors might again start to consider purchasing the F-35.[20][21][22][23]
A 1/4 scale model of the J-31 was shown at the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition 2012, hinting at a desire to offer the aircraft for export, as an alternative for those countries that cannot purchase the F-35.[24][25] AVIC confirmed at the exhibition that the aircraft was intended for export.[26][27] In 2013 Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong confirmed that the J-31 was only for export to countries unable to buy the F-35 and would not be used by the PLAN.[28] Stephen Biddle of the Council for Foreign Relations has speculated that the aircraft design was intended for domestic use, but found to be under performing and hence relegated to the export market.[29]
U.S. military and industry officials believe that once the J-31 enters service, it will automatically be a match for existing fourth-generation fighters like the F-15 EagleF-16 Falcon, and F/A-18 Super Hornet. In comparison to fifth-generation fighters like the American F-22 and F-35, the J-31's effectiveness against them is likely to come down to the number of aircraft, the quality of pilot training, and the capacity of Chinese radars and sensors.[30]

Flight testing[edit]

The prototype conducted a high-speed taxiing test and briefly became airborne. On 31 October 2012, prototype No. 31001 conducted the model's maiden flight.[2][31][32][1][33] It was accompanied by two J-11 fighters in a ten-minute test flight with its landing gear lowered.
With the maiden test flight of the prototype No.31001 on October 31, 2012, China became the second nation after the 1991 Advanced Tactical Fighter fly off, to have two stealth fighter designs in field-testing at the same time.[31][32] The aircraft has continued a limited test program, with footage emerging of further flights which took place in February 2013.[34]
In early April of 2014, new pictures of J-31 started to emerge on the internet, one showing it flying with a new engine which looks very similar to the WS-13 currently powering the JF-17 thunder fighter for PAF.[35]
Early November 2014, J-31 fighter jet arrived in Zhu Hai, China, and started preparation for flight display. It is believed to be publicly unveiled in Zhu Hai Airshow 2014, and to perform flight demonstration.
The J-31 was publicly unveiled on November 12, 2014.[36]

Design[edit]

The J-31 is a mid-weight, twin rudder and twin-engine jet with the typical configuration that is commonly shared by other 5th generation fighters such as Sukhoi T-50.[37] J-31 incorporates certain stealth characters such as forward swept intake cowls with diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI) bumps and a two-piece canopy.
The J-31 appears to be a smaller and more agile aircraft than the Chengdu J-20 that resembles a twin engine F-35C. This may be because it might be used as a fifth generation carrier based fighter.[38][39][40] Another feature that the J-31 shares with the F-35C (and most other carrier based fighter jets) is the twin forward wheels.[41] Bill Sweetman has cited several improvements to the F-35C design files the Chinese may have acquired in the J-31.[42] Like the F-35, the J-31 has two internal weapons bays that can each carry two medium range missiles, along with two heavy hardpoints and one light hardpoint on each wing, but while it seems to have added an additional light hardpoint to each wing over the capacity of the F-35, it seems to lack the capacity of the F-35 to mount a centerline gunnery or jamming pod.[43]
Vladimir Barkovsky of Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (formerly known as the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau) has stated that, despite some design flaws, the J-31 "looks like a good machine." Although it contains features already in use on the U.S. fifth generation fighter designs, it is "not a copy but a well done indigenous design." Barkovsky has confirmed that the engines on the prototype aircraft are RD-93s.[11][44] However, China already has an engine similar to the RD-93, the Guizhou WS-13 currently installed on the JF-17 which has the same thrust and size of the Russian RD-93. China is working on an improved variant named WS-13A with 100KN of thrust for use on the J-31. Lin Zuoming, chairman of China's AVIC, has said that he hopes to put domestic engines on the fighter.[45]
As the Chinese build up confidence in newer, more reliable and powerful domestic engines, they may be able to power the J-31 sooner than the larger J-20 and in greater numbers.[46]
USAF Lieutenant General Charles Davis has said that while the Chinese fifth generation fighter may have used stolen information from the F-35 program, it was unlikely to measure up to the American aircraft.[47]
Unlike the F-35's "baked in" fiber-mat stealth, the J-31 uses stealth coatings.[48]
The J-31 has a flatter fuselage than the F-35; which suggests a more pronounced air superiority focus for the J-31, since a flatter fuselage results in a smaller weapons bay but improves fuel efficiency and speed by decreasing drag.[49]

Differences between prototype and production J-31[edit]

Scale models displayed at airshows reveal several planned differences from the 31001 flying prototype, including a stealthier cockpit, a next-generation helmet mounted sight and holographic cockpit displays, EOTS and more powerful engines.[50]

The WS-13 (Chinese: 涡扇-13), codename Taishan, is aturbofan engine designed and manufactured by Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation to power the Pakistan-China jointly developed JF-17 Thunder light-weight multi-role fighter, and in the near future the Shenyang J-31 fifth generation stealth fighter currently under development.

Design and development[edit]

China began development of the Taishan in 2000 to replace the Klimov RD-93 turbofan, which had been selected in the 1990s to power the JF-17 light-weight fighter. It is designed to have a life span of 2,200 hours and an improved version, providing around 100 kN (22,450 lb) of thrust with afterburner, is under development.[1]
The WS-13 Taishan was certified in 2007 and serial production began in 2009.[citation needed] The 18 March 2010 edition of the HKB report stated that a FC-1 equipped with the WS-13 completed its first successful runway taxi test.[2]
Officials at the Farnborough International Airshow in August 2010 stated that a JF-17 development aircraft is flying with a Chinese engine, which is most likely to be the WS-13.[3]
In November 2012, Aviation Week reported that a JF-17 Thunder is flying in China with the Guizhou WS-13 engine. [4]

Sun Cong, chief designer of the J-15 carrier-borne fighter jet and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, accepted a special interview with Xinhua News Agency on March 2.
The J-15, nicknamed "lying shark", is China's first generation of carrier-borne fighter jet. When the piloted J-15 fighter landed on the Liaoning aircraft carrier for the first time and successfully took off, Sun was filled with excitement.

. "The indicators of J-15 are generally close to US F/A- 18 Hornet , reaching world-class standards."
To make sure the aircraft slides at a relative velocity of about 60 meters per second in a fixed and constant posture on the glide slope and land precisely on the fight deck, many key technological difficulties including the operation methods of the pilot, the technical design characteristics, and other aspects need to be overcome.
Sun is also the chief designer of the J-31. He hopes the J-31 can pair up with J-20 in the future in tasks of both high and low altitudes, to maintain continuing striking capability. He also hopes the improved version of J-31 can become China's next-generation carrier-borne fighter jet.

Since August China's fourth-generation stealth fighterthe J-31 "Falcon Hawk", has carriedout more than three sets of trial flights at a rapidly increasing frequencyAmerica's fourth-generation equivalent has achieved huge market penetrationand analysts believe that theexcellent performance of the J-31 will make it a strong competitor in this market.

J-31 performance compares favorably with F-35
Although similar to the fourth-generation stealth fighter, the J-31's overall aerodynamicdesign and stealth appearance is not so identical with J-20, which has a higher degree ofexposure. Military enthusiasts prefer to compare the relation of J-31 and J-20 with that ofthe U.S. Air Force F-22 and F-35. J-31 and F-35 use the same DSI inlet (non-boundarylayer separated lane supersonic inlet) design, the difference is, F-35 uses a single engine toprovide power, but J-31 is designed with double engines. In addition, some models of F-35support the short distance/vertical landing; J-31 cannot do this for the time being.
the J-31 is equipped with twin Russian RD-93 engines - news that has been confirmed by Russia's MiG Aircraft Corporation. The "Fierce Dragon" light fighter developed jointly by China and Pakistan is also equipped with this model of engine. Judged against the specifications of fourth-generation aircraft, the RD-93 engine seems somewhat old, but during prototype testing the use of a stable engine with mature technology is the safest approach. Sources point out that once in service, the J-31 will hopefully carry our self-developed WS-13 engine, which has significantly improved performance in comparison with the RD-93.
China's Air Force test pilot expert Xu Yongling points out that the J-31's stealth aerodynamic design, stealth engine design and stealth coating design have all reached internationally advanced standards in stealth technology. He also pointed out that the J-31 possesses both stealth capability and a considerable payload level. In addition, Xu Yongling says that China has its own considerations in the development of fourth-generation aircraft, taking account not only of the need for stealth, but also of its performance in air-to-ground and air-to-air combat, and the relevant weapons requirements.
This means that in payload, the J-31 will prevail over the F-35.(????)
