Boko Haram History In Nigeria: Leaders & Attacks Timeline
The Jamaa’atu Ahlus-sunnah lid-da’wati wal jihad, popularly known as Boko Haram is a strong pseudo-Islamist terrorist group, which has its base in Kanamma, northeastern Nigeria. www.naijagists.com
The group’s name “Boko Haram” is a Hausa statement, which upon translated into English, means “Western education is sinful”.This group is opposed to everything that is of Western origin, more especially Western education, ideologies and systems, such as democracy and others.
Boko Haram History In Nigeria
The Boko Haram sect, though has been existence since 2001, did not become popular in Nigeria until 2009, when it participated actively in the sectarian violence, which occurred then in Northern Nigeria.
Mohammed Yusuf, who remained the group’s leader until men of the Nigerian Armed Forces killed him in 2009, founded the Boko Haram sect. After his death, Abubakar Shekau became the new Boko Haram leader, and he still holds that position to date. Other prominent members of the group include Abul Qaqa and Abu Zaid, both spokespersons of the group.
Even though the group started out as a purely Islamic group, the present disposition of the group is questionable for three reasons. Firstly, the group is not only out for non-Muslims, it is fighting the government as well. This is evident in the group’s bombings of the UN complex in Abuja and other government owned structures. Secondly, recent Boko Haram news revealed that the group does not exclusively comprise of Muslims, as a few non-Muslims have been implicated as members of the group in the past.
Thirdly, the group has not spared some prominent Muslims, as they had attacked mosques and killed Islamic religious leaders in the past.
The Boko Haram crisis, which is still ravaging Nigeria to date started formally in 2009 with the sectarian religious violence between rival Islamic groups in Northern Nigeria. However, since then, not less than 10,000 people have been killed in various activities spearheaded by the group.

The most dangerous country for Christians
In the last two years, Nigeria has been the most dangerous place in the world for Christians. The reports coincided with statements made by a priest from Borno state, north-east Nigeria, claiming that 50 of the 52 Catholic churches in the region had been forcibly abandoned, damaged or destroyed. At the same time, the Nigerian Catholic Bishops' Conference stated that since 2007 more than 700 churches had been attacked.
In spite of heightened security – notably armed guards outside each church – suicide bomb attacks on churches packed with Sunday worshippers continued through 2013. The violence followed two years of vicious attacks against Christians, with attacks on Catholic cathedrals such as Zaria and Bauchi.
Deadly clashes in wake of election result
The violence peaked after the disputed presidential elections of April 2011 when, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria, 430 churches were destroyed or damaged. When Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, triumphed against Mahammadu Buhari, a Muslim from the north, the ensuing conflict left 800 people dead and 65,000 people forced out of their homes.
Boko Haram behind most anti-Christian violence
In many if not most cases, attacks against Christians have been carried out by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, which is not satisfied by the imposition of Shari'a law in 12 of the country's 36 states, where Muslims are very numerous. The group demands 'pure' Islamic rule and wants to overthrow secular rule and stamp out Christian influence.
Angered by reports of Christians carrying out reprisal attacks against Muslims and mosques in June 2012, a Boko Haram spokesman said: "The Nigerian state and Christians are our enemies and we will be launching attacks on the Nigerian state and its security apparatus as well as churches until we achieve our goal of establishing an Islamic state."

Since carrying out its first attack under Abubakar Shekau’s leadership in September 2010, Boko Haram has unleashed a wave of violence in northern Nigeria, mostly targeted against government personnel and security officers, Muslim politicians and traditional Muslim religious leaders, and Christians.[1] Although the insurgency began as a local movement in northeastern Nigeria’s Borno State, since August 2011 there have been increasing signs of international collaboration between Boko Haram and militants outside Nigerian territory, such as in Borno State’s border region, northern Mali, the Sahel, Somalia and other countries in the Muslim world. As a result of these international connections, Boko Haram, which in 2009 was known as a “machete-wielding mob,” has now matched—and even exceeded—the capabilities of some al-Qa`ida affiliates, while also incorporating al-Qa`ida ideology into the locally driven motives for the insurgency in northern Nigeria.
This article examines Boko Haram’s international connections and their impact on the insurgency in northern Nigeria.
Boko Haram in Mali
In November 2012, the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO)[2] and al-Qa`ida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) captured Menaka in Mali’s Gao region from the secular Tuareg-led militia, the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA). An MNLA spokesman said that MUJAO, AQIM and Boko Haram prevented the local population from leaving the city so that they could be used as human shields.[3] Several sources corroborate the spokesman’s claim that Boko Haram fighters are present in Mali.

First, news reports from Mali said that 100 Boko Haram militants reinforced MUJAO’s positions in the battle for Gao and that Boko Haram helped MUJAO raid the Algerian consulate in Gao and kidnap the vice-consul, who was executed by MUJAO on September 2, 2012, and that Boko Haram supported MUJAO, AQIM and Ansar Eddine in their January 8, 2013, attack on Kona, central Mopti region.[4] Second, displaced persons from Gao, including a former parliamentarian, said that Boko Haram is training at MUJAO-run camps.[5] Third, military officials from Niger said that Boko Haram militants are transiting Niger en route to Mali on a daily basis.[6] Fourth, a MUJAO commander said in an interview with a Beninese journalist for Radio France Internationale that Boko Haram members were arriving in Gao en masse.[7] Fifth, U.S. Africa Command General Carter Ham, who in January 2012 said Boko Haram has links to AQIM and al-Shabab, said in November that Boko Haram militants train in camps in northern Mali and most likely receive financing and explosives from AQIM.[8] In addition, the U.S. ambassador to Nigeria, Nigerian minister of foreign affairs, Nigerien foreign minister, Malian foreign minister and Algerian minister for Maghreb and African affairs report that Boko Haram and AQIM are coordinating operations in northern Mali.[9]
A Boko Haram video released on November 29, 2012, suggested that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau may be one of the Boko Haram militants in northern Mali.

During Clinton’s visit to Nigeria in August 2012, she was addressed in an open letter by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor of the Christian Association Of Nigeria. Oritsejafor is a prominent figure in Nigeria and testified in the U.S. at a congressional hearing in July 2012.
In his letter, Oritsejafor notes that the State Department, headed at the time by Clinton, resorted to “distortions, omissions and in some cases clearly misrepresent(ed) facts on the ground” in Nigeria in 2011 during a time when 700 churches were destroyed and hundreds of Christians were massacred by Boko Haram terrorists, representing the “largest single attack on Christendom in contemporary world history anywhere on the planet”.
Clinton’s State Department completely omitted these attacks from its 2011 report, which erroneously claimed that more Muslims than Christians died in the attacks. As Oritsejafor points out, 88.3% of the attacks targeted Christians, while just 2.9% were attacks on Muslims.
A potential motive for the State Department turning a blind eye to Boko Haram’s wave of terror in 2011 is the fact that the Obama administration was simultaneously arming and supporting the very Al-Qaeda groups allied with Boko Haram in Africa.

Elombah.com recalls that a forensic criminologist and security co-ordinator at the American University of Nigeria, Dr. Lionel Von Frederck Rawlins recently disclosed in an interview that Al-Qaeda and Al-Shabab terrorist organisations operating in the Islamic Maghreb and Arabian peninsula have been helping members of Boko Haram carry out their operations in Nigeria.
Rawlins, a US marine, who has worked in Europe, Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East and Far East as a counter-terrorist specialist, explained that Nigeria is under siege from terrorists from other lands.
He explained that Boko Haram currently receives help from other globally recognised terror groups. What you have now are “insurgents from other countries. They are trained by Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabab and other groups. They send people here to train them. They also go for training and come back but you must remember, many terrorist groups are in this together and they don’t have problem training and supporting each other because they know that one day, they can call each other for help and when they do, they expect that you will come and help. They may say ‘we need you to help us get Mali, and then you send people because they trained you, gave you funding and all the resources you need, so that was done for you to pay back. So, you are correct to say they got people to help them. There are times also that survivors report that people who came with Boko Haram to kill them were speaking a language they have never heard before; nothing out of Nigeria, so they could be French, Spanish, something from Mali, CAR, Kenya, etc. They know instinctively that it is not a Nigerian tongue which proves the fact that they bring in outsiders.”

First large-scale incursion: May 2013
Well-planned attack on 7 May 2013 in Bama, some 70km (44 miles) from Maiduguri, about 200 heavily armed men stormed a military barracks, police station and government buildings with in armoured vehicles mounted with machine guns. Fifty-five people were killed and 105 prisoners were freed in the raids. 200 people died in a retaliatory raid by the military. Thousands of buildings were destroyed.
Boko Haram staged an attack in the town of Bama, killing 55 innocents and freeing 100 prisoners. That month Reuters ran a story by Tim Cocks headlined “Nigeria’s Islamists staging bolder, deadlier comeback.” It explained:

(infowars) During Clinton’s visit to Nigeria in August 2012, she was addressed in an open letter by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor of the Christian Association Of Nigeria. Oritsejafor is a prominent figure in Nigeria and testified in the U.S. at a congressional hearing in July 2012.
In his letter, Oritsejafor notes that the State Department, headed at the time by Clinton, resorted to “distortions, omissions and in some cases clearly misrepresent(ed) facts on the ground” in Nigeria in 2011 during a time when 700 churches were destroyed and hundreds of Christians were massacred by Boko Haram terrorists, representing the “largest single attack on Christendom in contemporary world history anywhere on the planet”.
Clinton’s State Department completely omitted these attacks from its 2011 report, which erroneously claimed that more Muslims than Christians died in the attacks. As Oritsejafor points out, 88.3% of the attacks targeted Christians, while just 2.9% were attacks on Muslims.
A potential motive for the State Department turning a blind eye to Boko Haram’s wave of terror in 2011 is the fact that the Obama administration was simultaneously arming and supporting the very Al-Qaeda groups allied with Boko Haram in Africa.

I won’t write about Nigeria as a journalist. I am known in Nigeria as a national security specialist with decades of experience there.
I have close personal friends at the highest levels of government and only write these few words out of deep concern.
For those reading the news about Africa, both of you, Nigeria is under terrorist attack and preparing military operations against a group called Boko Haram, an Islamic group from the North, more accurately centered in Niger, a nation to the north, a cesspool of international intrigue.

This is all little but theatre. The US bought a ticket to a play staged in Afghanistan and has found themselves unable to find the exit. This one will be quieter as this is Africa, it will be black people killing black people. Few will notice, fewer will care. Those with a stake notice, they care, but their agenda has no room for human life.

Nigeria is a tinderbox beyond imagination. Decades old hatreds and fears are closer to the surface here than even in the Balkans. This is a very dangerous game some have chosen to begin.
Were they available, and who is to say they aren’t, Nigerians would gleefully use nuclear weapons to settle domestic differences.
Nigeria, is, in itself, a construct that never should have existed. The North is Muslim, the South is Christian, each side having nearly 100 million people and neither half is united in any way.
The history after colonial occupation is one of military dictatorship and corruption at levels unimaginable.
Nigeria is Africa, the most populace country, the most oil and gas wealth, the greatest economic potential, the biggest potential market. Thus, Nigeria is a target.
